Japanese Room Screen - Late 19th Century
An excellent example of a Japanese reversible single panel screen known as a 'tsuitate' in Japan. Made from cyptomeria and dating from the Meiji period (1868 - 1912).
Used indoors, room screens were commonly used to signify the entrance to the private area or sleeping area of a home to signal a guest to remove their shoes. These screens were also used in restaurants and businesses.
Lacquered with burgundy coloured urushi lacquer there are areas where the lacquer has worn through.
