Painted Brass Bound Indian Military Chest - 19th Century

We have a particularly special and vividly decorated Anglo-Indian Military chest. Painted with a dramatic and worn mint green paint. These were originally used by officers of the British Indian Army to carry their kit and personal possessions whilst on tour. This example dates from the 19th century and is constructed from teak with brass corners and handles.

The top opens to reveal a compartmentalised letter rack over a large interior space. On the base of the interior is a sliding panel that reveals a hidden compartment.

As these chests had to withstand a lot of punishment in transit, they were exceptionally well made.
